Sri Lankan Dhal Curry

As Sri Lankans, we know that there is nothing to stamp a home cooked dhal curry. Sri Lankan Dhal Curry has taken such a main dish in local food. Actually it is an easy dish to cook. Especially when you’ve spent the time on shopping or you’ve just had a full day of chores to finish around the house and when you need to make a meal for your family, then this is one of easiest and quickest dishes that you can prepare.

And we know that most of us have been loving this dhal curry since our childhood. For Sri Lankans, dhal curry can be served with rice and fish curry/chicken curry in order to have simple but completed menu for a main meal. Let’s find the steps of making this Sri Lankan dhal curry which is one of popular staple dish in Sri Lanka. It is ready to serve for 04-06 people.

Sri Lankan Dhal Curry – Steps

Before learning the steps, let’s see what the ingredients that you need to gather first are.

Ingredients;

Masoor Dhal – 400g

Saffron Powder – ½ teaspoon

Curry powder – ½ teaspoon

Chillie Powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Chopped Green Chillie – 01

Chopped Onion – 01

Water – 01 cup

Coconut Milk – 01 cup

Curry Leaves

Cooking Oil – ½ teaspoon

Mustard Seed – ½ teaspoon

Minced cloves & garlic – 02

Lime – ¼ teaspoon

Chillies – 02 (but you should break them into 2-3 pieces)

Salt to taste

Let’s see how to make this Sri Lankan Dhal Curry.

Firstly, you should wash the dhal well and boil it in a pan with adding water, saffron, onion and garlic. Once the colour of dhal turned into yellow, you should remove it from cooker and put it into a bowl. After that, keep the pan on low flame and add the cooking oil. Once the oil got hot, you should add the remaining ingredients except the coconut milk and dhal. Leave this mixture to cook for 1-2 minutes.

After that, you can add the dhal into this mixture and stir well. And leave it to cook for another few minutes. After that, you can add the coconut milk and salt (salt to taste) and leave it to cook until the dhal curry starts to boil.  Once you took out the curry from the fire, you can add the lime juice. Mmmm… this tasty Sri Lankan Dhal Curry can be served to 04-06 people. Serve this to your dearests with rice or bread or string hoppers.
