Therefore, we thought to discuss one of those essential things; sewing. In Sri Lanka, we call it Mahum Gethum. Actually sewing and embroidery are art.

Mahum Gethum – More
Basically, what you have to do is; familiarizing yourself with the basic stitches. Once you do that, then you can create more elaborate stitches that come from these basic things. Some may see it as too difficult to tackle. Therefore, now let’s learn some basic Mahum Gethum methods.
- Running Stitch – It is good for outlining an embroidery design. And it is a very quick stitch to do. It’s a hand sewing and can be completed by pushing the needle and floss in and over the fabric in one continuous motion.
- Backstitch – It creates a solid line and is good for hand embroidering text or outlining a design. You can begin by pulling the needle and floss up through the fabric and do one stitch forward.
- Split Stitch – This stitch is similar to the backstitch and it creates a solid line with an added texture to it. But it works to fill designs and create variation from the running or backstitch. What you have to do is; pull your needle and floss up through the fabric and create one straight stitch. Keep in mind that your needle and floss should be on the underside of your hoop. And then bring the needle up through the centre of the stitch you just created and stitch forward the same length as your early stitch. Like this, you can repeat by bringing the needle up through the centre of each stitch.
- Satin stitch – In Sri Lankan Mahum Gethum, this is one of popular methods among women. Actually it’s a good filler stitch. And it creates a smooth appearance. If you want to fill in hearts or the leaves of flowers, then you can use this stitch. What you have to do is; take your needle and floss and create one stitch. And then bring the needle up again just next to the opposite side of the initial stitch. And you should keep the stitches close to one another, as required to fill the pattern or design you are working with.
